Galena, Kansas Our recent visit to Galena, Kansas, revealed a city historically significant for its lead mining industry, which propelled regional prosperity and resulted in a population exceeding 30,000 in the early 20th century. Further contributing to the city’s growth was the designation of Route 66 in 1926. While the current population is under 3,000, Galena retains its small-town charm and notable status as the inspiration for Mater in the Disney/Pixar film *Cars*.
